Ms. Gergana Jouleva, AIP executive director, and Prof. Valeriy Dimitrov, President of the NAO

On January 15, 2013 the President of the Bulgarian National Audit Office Prof. Valeriy Dimitrov presented to Access to Information Programme Executive Director Ms. Gergana Jouleva the Symbol of the National Audit Office and a Diploma for AIP contribution to the enhancement of the publicity and transparency of the institutions in Bulgaria and to the development of an informed society.

The Symbol[1] of the National Audit Office (NAO) is a Falcon on a Cliff of Coins – a safeguard of the state treasury and the sovereignty.

The award was bestowed at a press conference held to present the NAO's Audit Plan for 2013. During the present year, the NAO will again control the legality, efficiency, effectiveness and economy of the management of public funds and activities.

“The award is very significant for us, as it is presented by an independent state institution which controls the spending of public funds. The logo of the National Audit Office is Watching over taxpayers’ money.

The mission of AIP is to work for greater transparency of state institutions and to assist the exercise of the right to information. Transparency is the first condition for the exercise of civil control over the work of the state bodies,” Gergana Jouleva emphasized.

The award is the sixth recognition which AIP receives for its long-term efforts in the access to information area: http://www.aip-bg.org/en/about/awards.php.

[1] The symbol is presented to Bulgarian and foreign citizens for their contribution to the development and recognition of the Bulgarian National Audit Office, to audit institutions’ Presidents when visiting Bulgaria, to prize winners of the annual awards for electronic media and press, covering the NAO activity: http://www.bulnao.government.bg/index.php?p=2071&lang=en.
